A passionate businessman, Bhaiya Bhagwandass, rises from his death bed to prevent a loss in his business. He receives a telegram from Patiala, informing him that his brother Latu Ram and his niece Kanti are planning to come live with him. Fearing that this will incur more expenses, the frugal Bhaiya plans for his death. When Latu Ram and Kanti arrive, they bring the young and dashing Suresh, son of a neighbouring widow, with them.
Bhaiya’s son Bhola is a spendthrift, unlike his father. He asks his father to part with Rs. 500 as an investment, telling him that the ration depot will soon be under their control, since the Deputy is his friend. Bhaiya parts with his money reluctantly, and Bhola goes straight to Dipti’s gambling den with it. There he meets his long-lost friend Daulu, who now runs a dancing troupe. Bhola falls head over heels in love with one of the dancers from the troupe. Extorting more money from his father, he buys her presents. In the meantime, Suresh takes control of the ration depot, and Kanti falls in love with him.
When Bhaiya learns of this, he is furious. He quarrels with Suresh, and locks Bhola up in the store room under the strict vigilance of a guard. Unable to sleep at night, Bhola spots Suresh and Kanti meeting in secret. He escapes, and the guard raises an alarm, waking everyone in the house. When Kanti is discovered missing, and eventually found with Suresh, Bhaiya is enraged, and a series of events are set in motion.
